Friends,

February is Black History Month, which provides us an opportunity to honor the significant contributions and rich cultural heritage of Black individuals throughout history. It reminds us of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our society and emphasizes the importance of continuing to work towards equality, equity and justice. We recognize the achievements and impact of civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, to the groundbreaking work of scientists like George Washington Carver, and artists like Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes, to name just a few. Celebrating Black History Month each year helps us acknowledge the past, celebrate progress, and inspire future generations to keep striving for a better, more equitable and diverse world.

As I mentioned in last week's newsletter,  the Yolo County Office of Education is celebrating Black History Month with a few events, including quilt displays in our County libraries, including:
Davis: Mary L. Stephens Davis-Branch Library, 315 E 14th St., Davis, CA 95616
Hours: Monday 12-8 pm, Tuesday-Thursday 9:30 am-8 pm, Friday-Saturday 9:30 am-5:30 pm, Sunday 1-5:30 pm
Winters: Winters Community Library, 708 Railroad Ave., Winters CA 95694
Hours: Monday & Wednesday 8 am-6 pm, Tuesday & Thursday 8 am-8 pm, Friday 8 am-5 pm, Sat 1-5 pm

In this week's newsletter, I provide updates regarding last weekend's community celebrations: Toast of Winters and the Davis Chamber Installation Gala; celebrating West Plainfield's new Fire Chief Dave Stiles and Assistant Fire Chief Marc Beoshanz; a county food ambassador opportunity; a Board of Supervisors meeting preview; upcoming events and more.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

Friends,

On Monday, January 20, County offices will be closed in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, which, on January 15, would have been his 91st birthday. This year also marks the 30th anniversary as a National Day of Service and I encourage everyone to participate in some form of community service on Monday.

At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, we acknowledged the day with a County resolution celebrating MLK's life and impact. Yolo County Superintendent of Schools Garth Lewis and Culture Co-op founder Sandy Holman accepted the resolution. You can watch the presentation here.

There will be many ways to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. day on Monday, including in Yolo County and in the Sacramento area. Here are some options:

  • In Yolo County:

    • City of Davis Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, January 20, 10-12:30pm. at the Veterans Memorial Building

    • Yolo Diaper Bank Community Diaper Wrap, Saturday, January 18, 10 AM-12 Noon/ 2 PM-4 PM, Woodland United Methodist Church, 212 2nd Street Woodland

    • Click here for on-going City of Davis volunteer opportunities.

  • In the Sacramento area, check here for events and volunteer opportunities.

In this week's newsletter, I provide updates regarding a recent community immigration forum; upcoming City of Davis community meetings; a Board of Supervisors meeting recap, upcoming events and more.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

In appreciation,
Lucas

January 10, 2025

Happy New Year - I hope 2025 is filled with good health and happiness for you and yours!

My heart goes out to everyone in our state affected by the devastating fires in Southern California. The destruction is beyond comprehension. I want to express my sincere gratitude to the brave firefighters and first responders for their ongoing and incredible efforts under unimaginable conditions. As we face the harsh realities of climate change, it's crucial that we come together to support one another and work towards a more resilient future. If you know someone affected by the fires, here is a list of resources available to them and here is the state's comprehensive list of disaster response resources. Because those of us in Northern California are no strangers to wildfires and other natural emergencies, here is a resource reminder to help us all be more prepared for disasters.

In happier news, on Monday, I attended the swearing in ceremony of our new and returning Yolo County Supervisors: returning Supervisors Mary Vixie Sandy, Oscar Villegas and Angel Barajas; and newly elected Supervisor Sheila Allen. It was an absolute honor to serve as Board Chair last year and I am thrilled to continue our important work with my colleagues and staff!

In this week's newsletter, I provide a preview of next week's Board of Supervisors meeting; a remembrance to Officer Natalie Corona; information regarding our County's commitment to being a safe and welcoming community; information regarding a recruitment opportunity for employers; upcoming events, and more.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

After 35 years with the City of Davis Fire Department, Battalion Chief Emily Lo has retired. I had the pleasure of celebrating her amazing tenure in public service at her retirement party last week, as pictured above. Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement, Emily! Thank you for your dedicated service to our community. Best wishes for the many adventures that lie ahead for you and your family.

In case you need it, this is your reminder that daylight saving time begins this weekend. Remember to set your clocks forward one hour on Saturday night/Sunday morning (2:00am Sunday).

Friends,

I am so grateful for this week's rain, we have needed it! I do hope you drive safely on the wet roads and check the weather forecast before traveling to Tahoe and the Bay Area.

Regarding these times of continued federal uncertainty, I encourage you to stay engaged and informed. Reach out to your U.S. representatives in Congress and the Senate to share your concerns and priorities. Your involvement can make a difference in shaping the future of our community and nation.

Here are some resources to help you find contact information for your representatives:

Continuing with the theme of engagement, I am deeply concerned about the threats facing the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the funding for our colleges and universities. In support of science, research, and innovation in our country, I attended the March for Science in Sacramento last week. You can read more about my thoughts on this below.

In this week's newsletter, I share a Board of Supervisors meeting recap; I highlight an upcoming Land & Labor Exhibit honoring Cesar Chavez, and a local artist's work, Marieke deWaard, who has shared her artwork with our office and whose work will be on display at Logos Bookstore, local scholarships deadline extension, additional upcoming events and more!

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

In appreciation,
Lucas

P.S. Now through May 21, I will be reminding you about my upcoming annual Party with a Purpose fundraising event. This year benefits Winters Healthcare and I hope you'll sponsor or buy tickets here

Friends,

At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board recognized Monday, March 31 as Cesar Estrada Chavez Day. For anyone unfamiliar, Cesar Chavez was a dedicated California civil rights leader and labor activist who fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of farmworkers. We celebrate Cesar Chavez Day to honor his legacy of nonviolent advocacy for social justice and his unwavering commitment to improving working conditions for those who harvest our food.

There was a commemorative event earlier this week in Yolo County, but for anyone wanting to join an event this weekend, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement is organizing the 23rd Annual César Chávez March and Rally in Sacramento on Saturday, March 29 starting at 10:00am. The event begins at Southside Park, 2115 6th Street.

As a reminder, County offices will be closed on Monday in honor of Cesar Chavez Day.

In this week's newsletter, I recap this week's Board of Supervisors meeting; highlight a recent volunteer appreciation event hosted by the Yolo Food Bank; highlight a Land & Labor exhibit that was held in our County Administration building; an upcoming LA fires fundraiser event; and more!

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

In this week's newsletter, I also highlight an interview I did recently with the Davis Vanguard's David Greenwald; I note the launch of the Yolo County Community Action Fund; and I highlight upcoming events and more!

As a reminder, I look forward to seeing some of you tonight at 6:30pm at the Winters Opera House for the Songs in Solidarity fundraiser to support those impacted by the LA wildfires.

Tomorrow, April 12, is UC Davis' 111th Picnic Day and I will be participating in the parade along with Congressman Mike Thompson, State Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and State Senator Christopher Cabaldon. We will be riding in the back of my friend, Stephen Souza's, all-electric Ford F-150. I hope to see you along the parade route and/or around campus!

Friends,

The 9th Annual Thriving Pink Gala last Friday was a meaningful night of community and solidarity. As a longtime sponsor and supporter of Thriving Pink, I appreciate all they do to help those affected by breast cancer in Yolo County. The event recognized grant recipients and the impact of Thriving Pink’s programs, bringing people together to make a positive impact in Yolo County.

In this week's newsletter, I highlight last weekend's UC Davis Picnic Day, including the shooting that took place at Community Park, where 3 of our young people sustained non life threatening (thank goodness, though still traumatic for all involved) gunshot injuries; I also remind our community how to sign up for emergency alerts; I share Earth Day 2025 news; information on next weekend's Winters' Youth Day; I highlight Winters Healthcare, recipient of the 2025 Public Health Hero Award and the beneficiary of my Party with a Purpose fundraising event that will take place on May 21; and I share upcoming events and more!

Last week I was honored to recognize Andrew Fulks as he prepares to retire from his role as the Assistant Director of Environmental Stewardship of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden. The legacy he leaves behind includes renovating the beloved Wyatt Deck into a fully ADA-accessible community space, building the Elizabeth Mary Wolf Environmental Learning Center at the Arboretum Teaching Nursery, and leading the visionary Arboretum Waterway Enhancement Project. I wish Andrew all the best in his retirement!

In this week's newsletter, I highlight the Walnut Park Library groundbreaking event; Thursday, May 1 is Big Day of Giving; I announce a Party with a Purpose partnership; upcoming events & more!

This Monday, May 26 we will commemorate Memorial Day, which is a time for us to pause and reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. As we gather with family and friends, let’s take a moment to honor their legacy and express our gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy because of their dedication. As a reminder, all county offices will be closed on Monday.

The Cemetery Districts in both Davis and Winters will hold Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend:

Last night, I joined an event at Central Park Pavilion to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month with an evening of music, history, and community. This year’s theme, "Immigration, Resilience, and Solidarity: The Jewish American Journey," highlighted the profound contributions of Jewish immigrants to American society. The event was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on history, build bridges, and honor the spirit of solidarity. Thank you to everyone who planned and joined in the celebration! Additionally, at the May 20 Board of Supervisors meeting, my colleagues and I passed a May is Jewish American Heritage Month resolution, which you can read here.

Another topic of great importance to me is protecting our parks and public lands. Sadly, they face ongoing threats to their protections. On Saturday, June 7, communities nationwide will take part in a National Day of Action to defend these areas, marking the 119th anniversary of the Antiquities Act, which has safeguarded sites like Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument.

While a recent amendment to privatize public lands was removed, efforts to weaken protections continue. Our public lands provide clean water, wildlife habitat, recreation, and economic benefits and preserving them ensures future generations can enjoy their lasting value.

In this week's newsletter, I highlight Yolo Local, a new information network; provide a Board of Supervisors preview; as well as information about signing up for a new Spare the Air alert system, a bike path repaving project and major road closure information. I also spotlight some upcoming events.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

Happy June! June is Pride Month, which is an important time to recognize and support the LGBTQ+ community. As a proud ally, I believe in fostering inclusivity and equality not only in June, but throughout the year. I am honored to sponsor Davis PrideFest this weekend and I look forward to celebrating with everyone there.

In this week's newsletter, I provide a Board of Supervisors meeting recap, highlight Wear Orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 6, introduce our new summer intern and more. I also spotlight some upcoming events.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

As pictured above, I had an amazing time attending last weekend’s Winters Farm to School Summer Feast fundraiser, which brought the community together in celebration of local agriculture while raising needed funds to support fresh, locally grown produce in school meals. The event highlighted the power of farm-to-table connections and the shared commitment to nourishing Winters’ students.

As County Supervisor, I’m extremely concerned about the reckless immigration raids happening across the country and the president’s alarming decision to deploy the National Guard and Marines against legal protests here in California.

I was also shocked to see California’s very own US Senator Alex Padilla forcibly removed, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed by law enforcement, at the June 12 press conference at the Federal building in downtown Los Angeles.

Like many of you, I’m extremely worried about where this is all headed.

I am also grateful to California’s elected leaders for continuing to speak out, and for taking legal action to defend our right to peacefully protest.

Next Thursday, June 19, Yolo County offices will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the U.S. were finally freed—a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and equality. In honor of this important day, county offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, as we reflect on our history and the work still ahead. Tonight, Friday, June 13, from 5:30-8:30pm there will be a Yolo Juneteenth event at Bridgeway Lakes Community Park, 3650 Southport Parkway, in West Sacramento

In this week's newsletter, I provide a reminder about an upcoming eastbound Caltrans road closure; a recap of this week's Board Budget hearing, highlight a new state heat score tool, and feature County comings & goings. I also spotlight some upcoming events.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.

Friends,

On Tuesday night, the Trump administration ordered the national suicide prevention hotline to end its specialized support for LGBTQ+ callers, effective July 17. I understand the weight of this decision on our LGTBQ+ friends, family and neighbors, it’s not just about a hotline, it’s about losing a space where an already marginalized community has felt seen and understood. In this week's newsletter, I highlight a free and anonymous mental health tool available to Californians ages 13-25. Additionally, if you or someone you know is seeking LGBTQ+ specific support, these resources are still available:

The Trevor Project
Call 1-866-488-7386, text “START” to 678-678, or chat online for 24/7 support.
Trans Lifeline
A peer support hotline run by and for trans people: 1-877-565-8860.
LGBT National Help Center
Offers hotlines and talklines for youth and adults: 1-888-843-4564.
OutCare Health
Connects LGBTQ+ individuals with affirming healthcare providers.
Mental Health America’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center
Offers guidance on finding inclusive mental health care.
Q Chat Space
A digital support group platform for LGBTQ+ youth.

In this week's newsletter, I provide a reminder about the upcoming Woodland Pride event; information on the afore-mentioned free & confidential mental health service for California youth,13-25; highlight this weekend's 13th annual Davis Music Fest; and provide a number of Yolo County Library updates. I also spotlight some upcoming events.

As always, thanks for reading, and please let me know how I can be of service.
